Anyone who has ever owned, or used a Polaroid camera knows the apparatus has a unique ability to capture the fleeting emotion of a specific moment in time better than any high-res DSLR or pro-grade camera on the market. This is what fuels so many web-based applications that take our tech-advanced photos and add patina, grain, and Polaroid type borders with a few key strokes. Nowhere is the allure of the 'old school' Polaroid more clear than in the recently released polaroid test shots and out takes from famed fashion photographer Helmut Newton, which served as the major inspiration for the Bibhu Mohapatra Spring 2012 collection.

The collection, like the Newton shots that inspired it, was filled with energy, emotion and supercharged sensuality that was communicated through plunging necklines and plenty of curve hugging silhouettes that were hyper sexy without ever being crass. A duo of prints, one that suggested chain and the other a square pattern that suggested Polaroid snaps strewn about the floor as if Newton had thrown them there himself, were expertly woven throughout the collection. Showing up both texturally in square sequins and raised chain-like ribbons, and through color pallette in an array of neutrals with pops of tangerine and pale tourquoise, these patterns served to unite the pieces without becoming redundant.

All of these elements were used to create a bountiful collection that exploded into 37 multi-layered looks that encompassed everything a strong, confident and powerful woman could want, from perfectly tailored of-the-moment wide leg pants and fitted tops to glittering gowns that felt perfect for the red carpet. There was literally nothing missing, not a single element a woman wants for Spring 2012 that didn't exist within the Mohapatra collection.

It was in short one of the best examples of vision, creativity, and point of view matched with first rate execution and production.
