Backstage beauty: Sally LaPointe Spring 2012

image:S.Whittle for Style WyldeEerie, disarming, and ultimately one of the most buzzed about collections to show during Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week, the Sally LaPointe Spring 2012 collection required a beauty look that was as unearthly as it was inspired. To deliver an avant-garde beauty look, that never upstaged the actual pieces, LaPointe turned to the industry's ultimate professionals, MAC cosmetics and Bumble and Bumble hair. Here's how the teams put the look together.

image:S.Whittle for Style WyldeFirst the hair: With the concept of "1920's ballerina with a dark edge" the Bumble and Bumble team started by spraying Prep and Bb gel onto hair to create a "wig wrap", with the hair divided into sections which secured the entire style.  When the hair dried, stylists placed a wig cap (pictured left) over the front sections, added Spay de Mode for more hold, and back combed the middle section before smoothing into a pony tail. Finally the ends were tucked up into the wig cap, and White Hair Powder applied for a smooth, seamless, almost sculpted look.

MAC key artist Kabuki explained his inspiration for the bold lipped look created for the Sally LaPointe show as "the mystical beauty of Merle Oberon in Wuthering Heights... a faded black and white photo of a super stylish woman ahead of her time...the line between bold and ephemeral." To create this look Kabuki and the MAC team focused on a precisely shaped mouth while keeping the rest of the face soft. Custom color for the lips was created by mixing Black, Yellow, and Orange Lip Mix, while the face was smoothed with Match Master foundation.  The eyes, keeping with the minimalist vibe, were simply brushed from lash-to-brow with Bare Contrast Sublime Culture Creamstick, and dusted with a light coating of Studio Fix Powder.
