Op ed: Can The Met go punk rock?

To be honest, there is something that always feels a little oxymoronic about "Punk Rock" fashion trends. And the idea, that the world's richest and most privileged people would gather in New York, all clad in couture versions of "punk rock" DIY fashion pieces, in celebration of music and  a movement that was designed as an indictment of their very own social class, well that just seems insane.

However, that is exactly what is happening in Manhattan tonight as the Met Gala kicks off the Museum's salute to the anti-establishment, anti-fashion underground "Punk: Chaos to Couture."

For fans of the genre, the exhibition itself is sure to be a crowd pleaser filled with photography (the museum is listing  shots of Sid Vicious as a major draw), garments, and even the toilets from CBGB on display. For non-fans, the exhibit offers an education on the roots of punk rock trends, complete with the opportunity to buy your very own "punk rock" tees, totes, sweatshirts or coffee table books in the gift shop as you exit the museum.

Ok, snarking on the museum is probably not the best use of Style Wylde column width. And if I am being honest, I will admit that I LOVED the Vivienne Westwood exhibition at the de Young a few years ago. (Even if I thought some of the text created for the early pieces was utterly groan-inducing.) I can admit that. I can also admit that I generally love museums, and even often buy the coffee table book after I've seen the show.

But the Gala, oy, I just can't get behind that. Unless of course Anna Wintour wears bondage pants and a nose ring to the event, then and only then will I accept this whole thing is going down. 

If for some insane reason you are dying to see celebs like Beyonce, Katy Perry, and Anna Wintour dress up like punks and attempt to be tough, the Red Carpet from the Met Gala will be live streamed online here.

The livestream of the Met Gala Red Carpet, is LITERALLY the mosti inane thing we've ever seen. Do yourselves a favor wyldies and don't watch it.
