Fashion feature: Katya Leonovich Spring 2013

Before unveiling her collection during her first-ever runway show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week New York, designer Katya Leonovich described her inspiration to Style Wylde as "Playing around the beautiful human body and trying to make it look different.....the metamorphoses of the body becoming the flower or animal or a piece of art itself." And, as the first pieces from the collection floated down the runway in a watercolor-worthy array of swirling blues and greens with pops of crisp whites and a few hints of pink, this art-driven if not totally revolutionary inspiration was visible everywhere.

But as the show closed with a duo of dresses baring the faces of President Barack Obama, and Republican candidate Mitt Romney, it became clear that the designer had not given up her playful point of view, or tongue in cheek attitude to appease the larger crowd in attendance this season.

The individual looks in the collection ran the gamut between just plain pretty, and eye-popping with corsetry and sheer panels making as frequent of an appearance as flowing silhouettes and tailored jackets.

As for those Obama/Romney dresses, clearly after tomorrow only one will be "wearable", but the fun of seeing them come down the runway is something no one in attendance is likely to forget for seasons to come.
