In her first runway presentation at Lincoln Center, designer Jackie Fraser-Swan of Emerson, showed a soft, subtle yet richly textured array of hyper-wearable separates. Primarily made up of neutral blacks and whites mixed with deep violets and blues, the Spring 2012 collection played with the idea of opposites: dark vs. light, soft vs. structure, rocker vs. girl next door.

Intricate details such as stiff netting that made small surprise appearances on necklines, under arms and in long slashes up the side of skirts gave the cool, otherwise laid back pieces a tough edginess. Completely devoid of anything overtly girly, the pieces fully encapsulated the spirit of that super-cool girl, a little bit tough and a little bit tomboy but still powerfully feminine, who always looks fantastic and never looks like she's trying.
