Walking through the Hamish Bowles-curated exhibit Balenciaga and Spain at the de Young Museum in San Francisco (which is set to close July 4th), was a breathtaking and highly inspiring experience one could not forget. But for Jill Giordano and Brian Scheyer, the design team behind locally based label gr.dano, the exhibit played an even more personal role: Muse and starting point for their own Fall 2011 collection.

In the official press release the gr.dano team explained their inspiration, and how it was used in their work:
"We used the famously feminine, yet ultra-modern shapes of Balenciaga as the starting point for our inspiration. Cultural influences of Spain such as the masculinity of the matador, sensuality of the Flamenco and the relaxed sophistication of the siesta were infused with the architectural details gr.dano is known for. Both Balenciaga and Spain have always had one foot in the ultra-modern and the other in a space dedicated to reverence to the past. This season gr.dano strived for the same result with its F/W 2011 collection."
