Tokyo Wylde: Spots to find Japanese style in the Bay Area

Designer Hirooka Naoto poses in front of his New People World store/Image:S.Whittle for Style Wylde

With all the talk of Tokyo around our offices these days we can't help but get into the Japanese-shopping spirit. And thanks to the major influence Japanese art, fashion and interior design has in the Bay Area and throughout the West Coast there are plenty of places to find a little bit of Japan locally. Some of our favorite expected, and unexpected places to shop include:

New People World

An obvious choice for the  Japanese Fashion and Culture fan, the New People World Building In San Francisco's Japan Town boasts two floors of fashion and home decor shopping, plus cafes, and art galleries all under one roof. Our favorite spots: The second floor store in store flagships for h. Naoto and Sou Sou. When your style is classic Japanese, or more gothic loli is spirit there is something for everyone.

IchibanKan at Tanforan Mall

Despite the shopping center's sad history, this Ichiban Kan location remains a favorite in the Bay Area. Less touristy and picked over than its Japan Town sister the South City shop offers nearly everything you can image under one roof from Japanese Beauty to Housewares at very reasonable prices.

SWATCH New Gent Lacquered collaboration with Hideaki Kawashima $75 each/Image: Swatch USASWATCH Union Square

With their newest artist collaboration with Japanese artist Hideaki Kawashima the legendary Swiss watch makers SWATCH are bringing a tiny piece of Japanese culture right to your wrists.

 Angel Pretty

A stronghold of Gothic Lolita fashion in the Bay Area, Angel Pretty offers an array of styles and pieces. From purses, parasols and socks, to full blown petticoated skirts all your loli needs can be met here.

Self Edge

Hard core Japanese denim addicts, know this spot as the go-to in the Bay Area for the real thing.  Brands carried include: Strike Gold,  Real Japan Blues, Buzz Rickson and Sling + Jones
