Weekend round-up: Live nude bands!
Ok, not really *nude* per se, but definitely live and local! This weekend, we recommend checking out:
Thursday
Starting a Rickshaw Stop for the weekly appearance of Popscene, this week featuring a guest DJ set by Chris Baio of Vampire Weekend. Tickets are on the door $10-12, 18+ and the doors open at 10pm.
Down at Brick & Mortar you'll find Yellow Dubmarine, a Beatles cover band with a difference, that difference being reggae. Tickets are $7-$10, the show starts at 9pm, and the vibe is guaranteed to be mellow.
Also on Thursday in SF you can catch hard working vocalist Sophie Barker who's vocals wowed us on Zero 7's ground-breaker Simple Things as well as albums by Groove Armada, The Egg, and various other projects. Now she has a new solo album, Seagull, and she'll be at Red Devil Lounge with local band oWNERSHIP. Tickets are $10 and doors are at 8.
Friday
The mellow music lovers we suggest you start right after work in downtown SF with the swinging sounds of The Jinx Jones Jazz Trio at Cafe Claude. Truly OGs on the local rockabilly scene the trio will get your night started right. 7:30-10PM. No Cover.
Then head on over to Oakland for the Vince Wallace Jazz Ensemble at Cafe Van Kleef in Uptown. No cover.
If something a little louder, and definitely more experimental is more your scene we suggest heading to Hemlock Tavern for Japanese rhythm monster Tatsuya Yoshida of Ruins Alone (formerly Ruins) with special guests Bronze and Bill Orcut. 9:30PM, $10 advance tickets available on Brown Paper Tickets.
Saturday
We start at the Uptown in Oakland you can celebrate Cinco de Mayo in the company of The Zeros and Midnite Snaxx - doors are at 9pm and tickets are $15.
Also on Saturday:
If you set the musical stylings of Beck to a dance beat, and added in a little Ron Jeremy for visual impact you'd have Har Mar Superstar! Catch him at Bottom of the Hill along with Father John Misty and Worth Taking. Show is 21+, tickets are $14 on the door and the show starts at 10.
Monday May 7th
Staying out late on a school night is worth it when The Wombats, The Static Jacks and The Neighborhood bring their brand of indie/electronic/pop to Slims on Monday. 8PM show General admission and Dinner tickets are available here.
or, for the harder-core music fans later next week... 2012 has been the year of major punk acts going on tour (such as Buzzcocks, Operation Ivy, 45 Grave, and many others) not to be left out of the party, The Dead Milkmen who are currently playing a series of dates up and down the west coast, will take the stage at Slims Thursday May 10th.... a handful of tickets still available online here.
