A foot-stomping, head banging weekend music round-up
As the holiday party season starts to get into full swing our social calendars start to get full. Make some room for some music and cram in one of this weekend's SW recommended shows.
Thursday:
Live house music act and Hed Kandi favorites Tortured Soul swing through Oakland for their Bay Area debut at The New Parish tonight. With their San Jose show on Friday already sold out this is the only other chance to catch them in the Bay Area. Hip Hop fans should be at Mezzanine tonight for Wu-Tang Clan as the original line-up (minus RZA who's busy acting) kicks off its nationwide Rebirth Tour.
For some foot-stomping, beer swinging good times get to Slims for The Brothers Comatose, The Human Condition, and local outfit (and an SW fave) Jugtown Pirates. For those inclined to something a little more mellow Popscene is the place to go with Aussie shoegaze outfit The Black Ryder.
Friday:
If your musical tastes include pirate polka or flamenco ska then you'll know that Diego's Umbrella are at The Independent and will be supported by Triple Cobra and The Loyd Family Players. At Rickshaw Stop it's a throw down as Popscene present Chicago vs. SF with Chicago's Hey Champ, Moneypenny, and DJ's Team Bayside High going up against locals The Butterfly Bones and DJ Aaron Axelsen.
Techno Francophiles should get down to 1015 Folsom for the incomparable Mr Oizo with local trio Boyz IV Men. More techno can be had at Temple with Josh Wink and dirtybirds J.Phlip.
If insane thrash metal fills your ears then Thee Parkside has Blasphemographer, Diocletian, Black Witchery, and Obeisance.
Saturday:
We start at Bottom of the Hill with an eclectic mix of bands put together by Terrorbird with Maus Haus, Fol Chen, Brent Amaker and the Rodeo, Exray's, and Epicsauce DJ's.If you're in the neighborhood of Hemlock Tavern then they have a double treat with a 6pm show featuring Victory & Associates and Hurry Up Shotgun plus a 9.30 show with Tropical Sleep, Midnite Snaxxx, and Hondettes. The Rock-It Room celebrates it's own Slick Rick's birthday with punk bands The Stitches, Sharp Objects, The Complaints, The Kegels, and The Neighbor Hood Brats.
In the East Bay it's all about Punk and Goth. The Uptown has 45 Grave, Plan 9, and Alaric and in Berkeley 924 Gilman has the hard stuff covered with Snowball, Poor Mans War, Bite, Loose Tights, and Sailor Mouth.
