Weekend round-up: A little something for everyone

Trance, techno, reggae, punk, alt-rock, the list goes on as we take a spin around the Bay Area's music scene and recommend our top live music picks.

This weekend we recommend checking out:

Thursday in SF: Popscene always like to bring the hippest bands to 330 Ritch and this week is no exception with genre-busting local boys Maus Haus. At Rickshaw Stop are 90's alt-rock lovers Bear Hands plus LoveLikeFire and Safe. If a mosh pit is more your scene then Thee Parkside has something to offer with Toxic Holocaust, Black Cobra, Dope Charge, and Earslaughter.

Friday in SF: We start with the Popscene lads again as they spend the night at Slims in the company of locals Rykarda Parasol, Tamaryn, The Hot Toddies, and Sioux City Kid. If techno is your thing then Ruby Skye and Spundae presents Germany's Timo Maas. Mezzanine competes for the attention of techno fans with Simian Mobile Disco along with DJ's Worthy and Solar. Bottom of the Hill as an evening of muscial experimentation with Battlehooch, Corpus Callosum, Sun Hop Fat, and KUSF's DJ Mashi Mashi. Down at Hotel Utah are SW favorites Tokyo Raid plus Box Squad and The Plastic Saints.

In the East Bay: In Berkeley there's almost something for everyone. At Blakes you can catch The Pentacles, Average Height Children, and Alright Class. 924 Gilman wishes Hans a happy birthday with The Phenomenauts, Sharp Objects, Boats!, Mystic Knights of the Cobra, Emily's Army, and Custom Kicks whilst Ashkenaz has reggae with The Rastafarians.

In Oakland Bang Data, Tokeson, and Los Hot Boxers are at The Uptown while the Latin theme is continued at New Parish with LoCura, Quetzal Guerrero, and Las Bomberas de la Bahia.

Saturday in SF: This weekend sees the 3rd edition of the SFX Festival being held at Mission Rock Cafe. This years lineup includes Music For Animals, The Ferocious Few, Hyena, The Hundred Days, Mister Loveless, The Steelwells, and Vanaprasta. The whole thing kicks off at 4pm and tickets are available here. If Saturday has you in the mood for some hard hitting trance then you're in luck as John 00 Fleming returns to Infiniti - get there early as this is likely to sell out.

Down at The Independent are Dawes with The Moondoggies and The Romany Rye. The Hemlock Tavern has another evening with Aquarius Records with music courtesy of Snailface, Atomic Bomb Audition, and Cartographer. Bottom of the Hill has something for everyone with the experimental folk of Tunng, the psychedelic thrash of White Cloud and the ambience of Carta.
