"Hula Girls" screening to raise funds for Japanese Relief
With so many images of destruction and despair coming out of Japan many Bay Area residents are left wondering, what can we do to help?
Thanks to New People Inc. the company behind the Japanese Film lectures we have previously covered here and the Gothic Lolita Fashion Show we covered here, helping just got easy, and entertaining!
On Saturday March 26th, New People will hold three special screening of the award-winning 1965 film Hula Girls, which takes place in Fukushima prefecture, the site of the Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant that was heavily damaged during the recent earthquake and tsunami on March 11th.
According to the official press release, Hula girls is " the heartwarming film is coal miners’ daughters who took a once-in-a-lifetime chance to escape their monotonous lives, only to become unwitting heroes to their depressed mining town as well as the whole of Japan."
Critically acclaimed when it was released in 1965, including a nomination for best foreign language film at the Academy Awards, Hula Girls on a large screen is an cinematic treat under any circumstances, and when you ad the opportunity to donate towards relief in Japan, it is absolutely a win-win.
Screenings will be at 2:00, 4:30 and 7:00PM. Tickets can be purchased with a suggested donation of $10 or more at the door, or in advance online. 100% of proceeds from the screens will go to the Northern Japanese Relief Fund.
