Fashion feature: Adeam Fall 2013
"I started this season by looking at the musical 'Into the Woods'. I was fascinated by the way different folktales intertwined with each other, and also the fantastical forest backdrop that brought everything together." -- Hanako Maeda, designer Adeam
Even if these words hadn't been printed on the run of show for the Adeam Fall 2013 presentation at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week New York, the inspiration was recognizable the moment you stepped into the crowded Box space at Lincoln Center. The evidence was everywhere, the dream-like forest painted on backdrops, long dresses that flowed in a woodland print, fur stoles, and even a blonde model draped in the single bright crimson piece in the collection, a coat draped over her shoulders a la red riding hood.
But don't let this description fool you. There was nothing campy or 'musical theater' about the Adeam collection. It was fresh and edgy and packed full of young, cool pieces that easily appeal to a hip urban customer.
Leather details in leggings layered under crisp dresses, and slim pencil skirts paired with angular tops mixed it up with tightly cropped tweed jackets and those extraordinary furs that radiated a vintage vibe for a totally modern feel that was alluring and just a teeny bit foreboding.
All of this left the impression that the Adeam girl is dangerous, not necessarily a villain, but definitely not someone to be messed with. Throw anything her way ( poison apple, or sleeping curse) and she'll deal with herself. And no glass slippers for this girl either, in fact the collection was completed with serious to-die-for booties in blue and black with a thick stacked wooded heel, and they fit perfectly!
