When viewing a collection from designer Hyden Yoo, "the story" is a huge part of the equation. Research, references, and historical context are always on the forefront of the designer's notes that are passed around at every presentation. And it is this almost cinematic talent for storytelling, and the nearly obsessive attention to detail that goes with it, that makes Yoo one of the most promising young designers to show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York.

The designer's Spring 2012 collection was no exception. This time the "story" was inspired by the Academy Award nominated film L'amant, 1920's neocolonialism (think world travel in a post King Tut world) and the juxtaposition between the wealthy elite and the working classes. Always the masterful director, Yoo set his collection in the cabanas at the Maritime Hotel, a setting that brought a balmy, almost tropical feel to the pieces, while maintaining the private, elite viewing vibe.
The collection itself was filled with romantic, easily wearable separates for men and women that hinted at the influences without being too literal or costumey.

A totally new addition to the line-up for Spring 2011, Yoo also introduced a complete line of accessories which included saddle bags, iPad clutches, and over-sized weekend duffle bags, all of which were equally lust-worthy and made this reviewer hopeful for their appearance in local boutiques.
