Sally Lapointe creates fashion theater

Stepping into the behemoth space which housed the Sally Lapointe Spring 2011 runway presentation, it was impossible not to wonder if the designer hadn't been a little overly optimistic in booking the enormous gallery.

Could a "first time at New York Fashion Week" designer's work really stand -up to the space, and more so, could she really fill this many seats?

Fill the space she did, both with bodies as what felt like hundreds of artists and club kids piled into the seats moments before the show started, and with her body of work which was a delightful departure from the mundane.

The collection began with models emerging from an elevator which had been fitted with huge steel doors to create the impression of a giant freezer. 

Accompanied by mists of dry ice, the models followed a complex track around the space which gave nearly every audience member an up-close and personal look at the designers wild alien-meets ice princess pieces.

Although certainly not the most wearable of the collections we saw during Fashion Week, Sally Lapointe's presentation was one of the most enjoyable  as it felt more like fashion theater than a mass-market consumer driven production.
