We tried it: Color.Bug by Kevin Murphy

Hair trend fanatics can tell you that with the rise of super model Charlotte Free, has come the return of bright, bold hair color! But for those not willing to make the permanent commitment to the trend, or for those struggling to maintain their salon-created hue styling genius Kevin Murphy has created Color.Bug; the here today wash-out tomorrow color treatment we couldn't wait to try out.

First, the facts:

Color.Bug retails for around $30 and can be found at high end salons in the SF Bay Area, such as this one; or online via a myriad of international sites.

Color.Bug is meant to be temporary washout-able color, that means it's water soluble, and probably should not be used before a trip to the beach or a swim party.

Color.Bug is not supposed stain skin or clothes, but if you sleep on all white sheets, pillows, and duvets like I do, be smart. We recommend you wash it out before you go to bed just in case!

Now, the fun

These things are BRIGHT.  I first saw it tested on Annette, the assistant stylist at my favorite San Francisco Salon, Stephen Saiz. The color was super noticeable even on her very-dark hair. But  on very blonde hair like my own, it's downright day-glow.

Color.Bug is super easy to use. With a chalk-like texture , Color.Bug can be "drawn" right on the hair in a quick swipe; so much better than messy creams or gloppy hair-mascaras.

Hairspray extends the life of Color.Bug. With a very light spritz of finishing spray over the area where I applied the color bug lasted overnight, and through the following day. (see note above, I slept on a towel to prevent color transferring to bedding!)

Color.Bug is a fantastic in-between-appointments product for those of us with "real" color in our hair. We all know semi-permanent, done-in-the salon-color looks the absolute best and has the least destructive impact on your bathroom tile! But who has the money to go-in every 3-4 weeks for bright-color refreshing? ( I don't.) For this reason above all others Color.Bug won me over. With Color.Bug, I can "keep my pink" looking brand new in-between my regular appointments; and that is a major money saver!
