Concert recap: The XX electrify at the Berkeley Greek

Fans lined up for a good spot TWO HOURS before The XX was scheduled to go on / Image C.Hope for Style WyldeFor any band a live show, especially at an outdoor arena, can be a risky endeavor. Without a sound studio, and at the mercy of unknown variables such as tricky acoustics and audience energy, even the biggest names in the industry have been known to fall flat. Just think about it for a moment, when was the last time you went to a major festival, or outdoor show and thought the band DIDN'T sound flatter, and less impressive than their recorded sound?

For indie darlings The XX however, those worries were put to rest within moments of starting their set on this past Saturday at Berkeley's iconic Greek Theatre

Exploding with energy and power, the trio (Romy Madley Croft, Oliver Sim and
Jamie Smith) far exceeded expectations with a fast and frenetic performance that showcased the musical, vocal and rhythmic talents of the band.

The set itself was ultra satisfying for The XX fan, covering the bulk of both  2012's Coexist and 2009's XX.  Picking favorites from the night is difficult, but it was not difficult to see the audience's over the top enthusiastic reaction to the slightly sped up, and pounding versions of  "VCR", "Crystalized", and "Infinity" as well as the haunting renditions of "Missing" and "Angels".

And that audience enthusiasm, well this attendee wasn't the only one who noticed it. In perhaps the most charming moment in recent pop music history, the band (who were noticeably overcome with emotion)  took a moment during the encore to acknowledge their gratitude for the reception at, as they called it "Their biggest American show to date", and even shot instagrams of their experience from the stage.  All of which, caused the already cheering audience to ascend into an ear-shattering roar of applause.

All and all it was truly one of the best concerts this fan has been to in years.
